MadCap Mimic 5

If you bought MadCap Software's MadPaq suite, you may have focused on Flare and not paid much attention to the other tools. But the other MadPaq tools offer a lot of capability on their own. One of those tools is Mimic, a powerful visual authoring tool for creating movies and simulations. What does this mean?

For years, software training was primarily text-based... paste screen shots into a Word document, add some descriptions and instructions, and voila! The result worked, but how much more effective might the training be if someone actually “walked you through the steps” on the screen? Mimic lets you create that “someone”.

Mimic lets you create movies and software and role-playing simulations quickly and inexpensively. It lets you capture what's on the screen as you perform some software-based task, save those screen shots as a “filmstrip”, add explanatory and instructional captions, special effects, even interactivity features to simulate use of the software, and play the result back as a “movie”.

It's a deceptively simple but powerful tool that can create movies for use as demonstrations, marketing presentations, role-playing simulations, and tutorials. The movies are also very flexible. They can run locally on users' PCs or from a network drive or web site. And, compared to many other such authoring tools, Mimic is quick and easy to learn and inexpensive - $299 if you buy it on its own or “free” as part of the MadPaq suite.

This half-day, hands-on seminar is aimed at technical communicators, trainers, training developers, marketing staff, and business continuity staff who need a quick jump start on the basic mechanics, design, and planning required to create movies using Mimic. The course does not cover the interactivity features but explains what they are to help you continue learning. The only prerequisites are a basic knowledge of Windows, Internet Explorer, and PC skills in general.
